Miami sunset cruise: the departure time is everything
The light that people book this trip for lasts about forty minutes, and it starts before the sun touches the horizon. Leave at sunset and you have already missed it.
Work backwards from the sun, not forwards from dinner
Take the sunset time for your date, subtract an hour and fifteen minutes, and that is when the boat should be leaving the dock. Fifteen of those minutes go on getting out of the marina and into open water, and the rest buys you the long golden light before the sun drops, which is the part worth photographing.
In Miami, sunset moves from around half past five in December to a little past eight in June. A two-hour outing booked at seven works in July and is pitch dark in January, and that single mismatch is the most common disappointment in the whole category.
Which way to point the boat
The postcard is the downtown skyline lit from the side while the sky goes orange behind you, which means being east of the city looking west. From the middle of the bay, off Brickell or off the Venetian Islands, you get both the towers and the water reflection in one frame.
Heading out of Government Cut into the ocean gives you a cleaner horizon and a colder picture, with no buildings in it. Both are good trips; they are not the same trip, and it is worth telling the captain which one you came for.
The things that spoil it
Wind, not rain. A summer shower passes in ten minutes and often improves the sky; fifteen knots of easterly turns a flat bay into a wet ride and the captain will say so. Second is the crowd: on a Saturday in season the anchorages fill, and being two hundred metres further out is worth more than any upgrade.
Third is bringing glass. Most captains ask you not to, and the ones who do not ask still have to sweep the deck afterwards.
